Hi,
Most of us know that crabs must be eaten while alive but for how long they can survive with seawater?
Can we slaughter it and freezze it for later comsumption? Will it taste the same?

Thanks,
Terry.

I have transported crabs in wet hessian bags and have kept alive up to 3/4 days though the flesh seemed to detereorate the longer they where out of water. As for freezing, a friend told me he did it all the time and was fine but each time I tried the flesh when cooked would be mushy and a lot less tastier then when fresh,
Cheers

the first time i bought back 5 big size mud crab n its dead. my dad took only the claws and throw away the body. wah piang eh! i was shocked! he said, when its dead the flesh will smell rotten. i dunnow how true. haha! my fault for putting the crabs in the coolerbox full of ice, practically bury them with ice. lol!

I wonder how some people can claim thats their secret spot or their spot and the "spot" belongs to them.

to keep the mud crab alive for few day, do not keep the crab in water, keep them out of the water but make sure must cover the tank or pail or box so that mosqito cannot enter, heard from many old people that they said the crab will died once their eyes been poked by mosqito....
And also if the crab never eat for few day , their meat will shrink, thats why sometime when u see a huge crab with huge pincers but when u crack open the pincers , the meat inside only little bit.

'mud' crab hide under the mud, and mud has lot of bacteria or parasite... so must clean the mud crab thoroughly before cooking it. and also must handle careful with the mub crab, do not let the spikes of the crab to poke onto you. There was a news from Strait Times that an old man was handling the crab but was poked by the spikes then he never think much of it and then he got the flesh eating on the hand and arm then too late to save his life...

while keeping the crab, make sure you tie up all their pincers.

U cant tell the difference between a newly died mud crab and a rotten mud crab by looking at it. Only the odour can tell apart.

hope this tips can be some helps to you. Smile

Mud crabs are best when alive, once they are dead they turn stale very fast.
