Habitat & Fish Behavior
Archers are opportunistic feeders which will gladly feed on surface insects which presents itself to the fish.
But they are easily spooked and may go off feeding if badly spooked by a bad cast or a missed hook-up.
Tackles & Flies
Floating line with a 9ft leader is often used to keep the fly sufficiently far from the fly line and not spook them.
I prefer to stagger the leader into sections of a 4ft butt of 20lbs, to 2ft of 16 to 2ft of 8 and a bite tippet of 1ft of 4 - 6lbs
The preferred aresenal would be parachutes, adams, or any dry fly patterns which resembles a flying insect of the location you may be fishing in.
Retrieval Action
As with most dry fly fishing methods, you can elect to leave them as it is and allow the fish to come up to it and investigate or you can choose to make it move a lil more and make it seem like a dying insect in the death throes.
And for those fishing on a higher grounds may have success with a fly method which I picked up from the magazines, fly dapping. Allow the wind to help hold up the line and leader and let the fly dap on the surface of the water akin to an insect trying to lay eggs on the water surface. This often drives the archers crazy and they will often launch themselves at the fly and attempt to drown the fly with a spurt of water before they gulp it down.
And the best thing about this species is that it's easily available in our concrete jungle.
