Sage GSP 570-3 Graphite III B (Spin Model)

Had just completed a Sage 3 piece, 7 foot rod for a friend.
Being a light tackle freak, he intends to use it, matched with a Stella SR3000, to pop for the sailfish. Hence, he requested to have a gimbal fixed just for this once. Shock
Looks very off to me but since he insists...what to do? Laughing

Anyway, hopefully after his sailfish popping trip, he'll asked to have the gimbal removed when he uses this rod in future for normal baiting / luring purposes.

Nice rod with a very well crafted handle.

I sure want to hear of your friend's experience with this rod when he manages to catch a sail with it. It will be hilarious.

Thanks, I did a little experiment with the handle.
Turns out to be quite appealing to my eyes at least... and very good grip indeed. Just hope it wont wear out too fast. Haha...
Guess I gonna go grab a blank & do something similar to the grip for myself soon. Laughing

Hilarious is still OK, I hope its not disastrous!! Laughing Laughing

mkim,

If you are building another similar rod, suggest u use natural cork for handle and a Pac Bay metal with wood inlay reel seat to match the beautiful Sage colour. Suggest u use titanium guides and also a hot pink tartan butt wrap just after the Sage logo and inscription, then you will have a real beauty.

Keep on building.

Hahaha....I'm not any expert or any "tan chia" rod builder, skill not there yet for fanciful butt wraps, let alone tartan.
So far, only know how to do simple cross chevron.
I'm a fan of vertical chevron though.

Personally, I always prefer cork grips to EVA/hypalon, unless jigging, popping or offshore fishing. In fact, I even have quite a few boat rods of cork handles.

But thats my friend's rod, so naturally got to build to his preference. Laughing

btw, the handle grip you'd shaped for your sage bc rod is very nice.
Have a very smooth feeling look... you use cork seal, cork vanish or wax? Laughing Laughing
For my rods, I only use cork seal all the while.

mkim,

I only use cork seal. It all depends on cork quality and those were almost flawless, 100% natural.

Just got back from the Rompin Trip, here's to you with regards to the Sage rod on sail. Most sails landed within 5 mins.
The only hilarious moment was the sail that was foul hooked on its head by a popper and it took my friend for a ride round the boat side, then underneath it several times before it got free. (total fight time - 25 mins) Laughing Laughing
In fact, it's not too bad at all, good enough to handle the sail, the sails could have landed much earlier if not for the undersized/underpower reel .
Laughing Laughing
My friend caught about 5-6 sails on that rod if I didn't remember wrongly.

mkim,

Congratulations. This only proves that when a good quality blank like Sage is put together by a good rod crafter and fished by a good angler, it will withstand all the punishment.

Thank you for the kind comments....
But me and my friends were just very keen anglers and for myself, I only build rod out of hobby & my free time. Never a craftsman like you mentioned...Haha.
But your comments regarding the Sage blank is very true.... it is a good blank that is worth every cent of its cost.

Cheers!

mkim,

Sage is one of the best multiple piece fly rod blank manufacturer. In the US many rod builders use their 7 to 12 wt fly blanks to build into spinning rods for steelheads and salmons. Using such rods to fish Sails can be another application for such multiple piece rods.

The pictures you posted showed very clearly the beautiful taper of the rod. Your positioning and the number of guides are spot on.

Keep it up.

Hello,

That ist a very nice rod.

I have a generally question about the rod which is used here.
In Germany we use spinning rods with 20 lb line an 2 oz casting weight to fish on medium northern pike ( up to 20 lb ). The northern pike isn't a good fighter.

Now I have read here, that you use a Sage spinning rod with 20 lb line weight to fish on sailfish. In Germany the experts would recommend 30 lb boat rods for sailfish.

Can you please explain me why you use that light rods for very big fish?

Which spinning rods from Sage (line weight) would you use for medium to big rainbow trout an which one for medium northern pike?

Does somebody know if factory build Sage rods have Fuji guides?

Thanks very much an TL, Thilo

Using a lighter tackle on these sailfish would prolong the fight and more challenging on the angler. Some of the anglers here are using ultra-lights with line class of 4~8lbs for other species.

Agreed with Jack here... there are other anglers that were using even lighter outfits on the Rompin Sails out there...
And I stressed Rompin Sails only... Laughing

Rompin sails are generally smaller and Rompins waters are pretty shallow and the maybe because of the above, plus the water condition over there, the sails do not put up as great a fight as its cousins elsewhere.
For eg., Phuket sails of the same size, would fight much better than the Rompin sails.

Actually the Sage rod is good enough to handle the sail, but not the Stella SR 3000.
If only my friend had used a stronger reel, the fighting time would be cut by quite a significant margin on those Rompin sails.

Not too sure about pikes and trouts as we do not have them here, so I cannot really comment on what kind of rod I would use to target them...sorry.
However, I would love to catch try my hands on them some day.

The above rod is only the purchase of the Sage blank itself, not a factory roll rod, all the Fuji guides (size, no.) used are of our own preference/judgement.

Cheers!
